Preparing your AC for Cyclone season

With the wet season in the top end of the NT well and truly underway, we thought it was timely to share with you some tips on how to prepare your AC for the possible threat of a cyclone. See below our top 5 tips:

  1. Prepare yourself: First and foremost it’s important to make sure you and your family are prepared. First aid kits, drinking water, non perishable food items, waterproof storage containers, towels, batteries and torches should all be part of your preparation.
  2. Cool your home prior to the cyclone: Keep curtains closed to ensure your home stays cool should there be a power outage. Power can quite often be cut off during a cyclone.
  3. Clean up your backyard: Any debris or backyard possessions pose a threat to the outdoor unit of your air conditioner. Last year we witnessed several damaged AC units around Darwin due to flying debris during cyclone Marcus.
  4. Turn off your AC: During the peak of the cyclone we recommend to turn your air conditioner off. Electrical power surges can cause damage to the air conditioner, which can result in serious repair or replacement of the unit.
  5. Assess the AC after the storm: We recommend that you don’t turn your air conditioner back on after the cyclone until you have assessed the condition of it. If there is debris in the outdoor unit and you start the air conditioner – this could cause more damage.
